The chemist Cameron McEwen returns to whenever he needs a case of an environment passing from invisibility into science. Lavoisier is not offered as a genius but as the person who found a way of talking about elements that other researchers could take up and build on — the difference, in Cameron's account, between chemistry and alchemy. Dialogue 63 is the long treatment; it also supplies the phrase the archive reuses, that the chemical elements were invisible "before Lavoisier."

Promoted from a name on a list of scientific firsts into the archive's standard case of an environment becoming visible — and, with Priestley beside him, into the demonstration that what separates a science from an alchemy is shareable focus rather than superior insight
The credit is split and then unsplit — Priestley did the same experiments while still inside the phlogiston theory, which locates the break not in the laboratory work but in what could be made of it.
"Lavoisier and Priestley. Lavoisier is the... Priestley still was very much involved with old science and phlogiston. And so Lavoisier was the guy that began to... figure out that it was possible to define atoms or elements that had been talked about since the Greeks."
The achievement is relocated from the elements to the talk about them — two millennia of correct intuition had failed for want of a communicable form, which is the structural point Cameron will apply to media.

Alchemy is defined not by error but by non-cumulability, which converts the whole chemistry example into a criterion Cameron can then hold his own field to.
"Because if you just have talk, then you have alchemy. Anybody can say, well, this is an element or that is an element, but they're unable to communicate that in a deep way that allows other people to do the same experiments and to come to the same results and on the basis of those results to advance further."
Stated at working scale, and deliberately unheroic — the revolution consists in a repeatable procedure for attending to one thing, which is why it generalized to silver and gold and tin without further discovery.
"And so what Lavoisier did, somewhat in common with Priestley, was isolate how you can focus on oxygen in a laboratory setting."
The three-part formula that ties the session's opening to its middle — Lavoisier takes his place beside Plato and Gutenberg as a name for a threshold, and the present is placed on the near side of a fourth one nobody can yet see across.
"They're just as invisible as literature was before Plato, just as invisible as printing was before Gutenberg, just as invisible as the chemical elements were before Lavoisier."
