McLuhan's March 1969 interview for Playboy, conducted by Eric Norden — the widest-read McLuhan text of his lifetime and the one the series quotes most often for a formulation in plain words. Two readings run through the archive: Bob's, that the answers are too articulate to be speech and were written out; and Cameron's, that the interview is not a summing-up but "one more attack on the same salient" McLuhan had been working since about 1947. Enter at dialogue 50, which holds both.
Across the dialogues
Enters not as a source but as a puzzle of register — the answers read as too precise for speech, which Bob resolves by concluding McLuhan wrote them out
The evidence is prosodic rather than documentary — Bob reads the register against the format and concludes the text cannot be a transcript, which is a claim about how the most-quoted McLuhan was actually made.
"They don't seem the way someone would talk, not colloquially in a Playboy interview."Bob Dobbs, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 49 (19 May 2022), 1:46
What could be an accusation of fakery becomes a defence of craft — the writing-out is why the interview is the clearest McLuhan there is, which is also why it is the least like him.
"But it was probably better that McLuhan wrote out the answers, since he wanted to be as clear as possible."Bob Dobbs, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 49 (19 May 2022), 2:01
Demoted from a landmark to one more attempt on a position McLuhan had held since the late 1940s, and then mined for a single italicized word nobody else has noticed
Cameron flattens the interview's special status. If the position was settled by 1947, then the famous 1969 text is a late restatement, and reading it as the arrival of McLuhan's thought inverts the chronology.
"And the Playboy interview just represents one more attack on that same salient."Cameron McEwen, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 50 (9 Jun 2022), 16:36
A typographic detail is offered as proof of how little the most-read McLuhan text has actually been read — the emphasis sits in plain sight in the best-known document in the field.
"I end by saying the word content is italicized in the actual Playboy interview. And I noticed that years later, no one else has ever pointed that out."Cameron McEwen, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 50 (9 Jun 2022), 1:58:46
The italic is made to carry the whole argument — emphasizing content marks the point where the medium/message distinction closes, so the throwaway detail turns out to state the thesis.
"Why is content italicized? That means the form and the message came together."Cameron McEwen, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 50 (9 Jun 2022), 1:58:58
