The journal McLuhan and Ted Carpenter edited out of the Ford-funded Toronto seminar from 1953 — nine issues, and the place where most of what became McLuhan's method was first tried in public. The series treats it as an archive to be excavated rather than a text to be read: Cameron dates essays by issue number, and Bob returns to the first issue for the seminar's own account of what it was licensed to do. Distinct from the Explorations Group that produced it, and from Verbi-Voco-Visual Explorations, which is issue number eight. Start at dialogue 64.
Across the dialogues
Enters through its first issue's statement of method — the seminar describing its own licence to think aloud and correct itself, which the dialogues take as their own charter
The journal's opening piece is treated as a founding document rather than an article — what the seminar said it was for, which the dialogues then measure themselves against.
"I think it's in the first essay in Explorations. He's discussing what their seminar is doing."Bob Dobbs, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 64 (2 Feb 2023), 30:28
The licence Bob prizes is the one to be wrong in public and fix it — an editorial policy that describes the conversational form these dialogues take seventy years later.
"And you can make suggestions or say things with the right to make self-correction or just correction."Marshall McLuhan, read by Bob Dobbs, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 64 (2 Feb 2023), 30:34
Reconstructed issue by issue as a real publication with contributors rather than a McLuhan vehicle, with a stress theorist in number one and McLuhan's own stress essay four years later in number eight
The journal is established as a genuine interdisciplinary venue, not a McLuhan house organ — a working endocrinologist in the first issue is what makes the later borrowings traceable rather than coincidental.
"Hans Selye published an essay in Explorations. That was in Explorations number one."Cameron McEwen, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 70 (25 May 2023), 16:51
The four-issue gap between Selye's stress essay and McLuhan's own is the evidence of transmission — the journal is where a borrowing can be dated, because both ends of it were printed in the same run.
"So in McLuhan essay on stress in Explorations eight, he has the following to say."Cameron McEwen, The Resonant Interval, Dialogue 70 (25 May 2023), 17:02
