concept

Bob Dobbs's term for the half of tactility that shapes without touching — the hand miming a curve in the air rather than pressing against it. It matters to the system because tactility, in McLuhan's definition, is not a sense at all but the interplay of the senses; the haptic is the nearest thing to it that can still be pointed at, and so becomes the figure through which the non-sensory ground gets handled. Dialogue 80 carries the fullest working-out, prompted by Cameron's observation that haptic and phatic are anagrams.

Stops being a term Bob uses in passing and becomes a defined position in the system — pushed there by Cameron's anagram, it acquires a mechanism, an economic reach, and a fixed place beneath tactility

The two are separated by one mechanism — pressure. Tactility completes a circuit and releases it; the haptic never closes.

"Haptic is... half of tactility. Tactility is touch and then let go. Touch, contact pressure, then empty."

What the haptic works on is the interval itself — Bob's "action in the gap," a pattern made in a void rather than against a surface.

"So there's contact pressure in tactility, but not in the haptic. It's just a shaping. It's a movement of the hands, but it's the tactile hands, and they're shaping a pattern in the tactile void in the gap, action in the gap."

The gesture scales up: an economy is a system for shaping value nobody touches, which puts the haptic at the root of wealth rather than at the edge of perception.

"So the haptic is the content of Wealth-making. The economy is haptic."

The pair is a ground relation, which explains why the haptic is what anyone actually encounters — the ground beneath it cannot be met directly.

"So the haptic is the figure and tactility is the ground. And everybody wrestles with the haptic."

Bob stretches McLuhan's pun to planetary scale — once the gap is the medium, living in it is not contact but the endless imitation of contact.

"So life becomes an interplanetary massage. Action in the gap. A lot of massaging. Miming the massage."

Bob catches himself repeating an unsourced statistic and disowns it in the same breath — a rare on-air audit of his own McLuhan lore.

"McLuhan used it, the haptic, twice in all of his writing. I don't know where I got that. Is that true? I don't think so."

The definition Bob settles on is one of distance, not of kind — the haptic is what you reach when you step one degree back from something that was never a sense to begin with.

"I used to say that it was part because tactility was not a sense but the interplay of the senses. The first thing that's closest to the non-sensory tactility is the haptic. Haptic is tactility slightly removed."

Connections

figure toTactility

The haptic is the figure and tactility the ground — a shaping without contact pressure, tactility slightly removed.

Cameron notices mid-session that phatic and haptic are built from the same letters, which sends Bob into his fullest definition of the second term.
