Cameron McEwen's coinage in dialogue 66, offered in answer to Bob's account of what the present is doing with the body. Where the echo McLuhan finds in From Cliché to Archetype is productive — the formative process of consciousness sounding through the whole content of the unconscious — the negative echo is the same motion gone sterile: a shuttle between isolation and merger that can rest at neither end. Its diagnosis is that both poles are versions of one wrong question, the search for matching; its exit is not a better pole but tactility, the interval the shuttle keeps crossing without noticing.

Coined on the spot as the pathological twin of the McLuhan echo — where the good echo carries the formative process of consciousness into the unconscious, this one just bounces between two poles that cannot hold, which gives the series a name for motion that looks like search and is only oscillation
The term is minted here, and minted as a negative — it takes its sense from the productive echo of the page-130 passage, which makes the pathology legible as a deformation of something the archive already values.
"So I would, tell me if I'm wrong here, I would say that that's what might be called the negative echo."
What makes it negative is not either pole but the instability — the motion is constant and gets nowhere, which is why it reads from inside as searching.
"it's an echo that goes back and forth between and the problem of isolation and detachment and the problem of the real world. It's going back and forth and it's unable to find stability in either the one pole or the other pole."
Both ends of the shuttle turn out to want the same thing, so no amount of travel between them can help.

The exit is a subtraction, not a destination — what has to go is the assumption that being oriented means finding something that fits.
"the whole problem is to give up what you think is orientation, namely the search for matching."
The instability is reread as information — the discomfort of not matching is the only thing pointing the way out of the oscillation.
